Welcome back - it's nice to have you here!

Before we dive in...

What's one decision from your past that still takes up more mental space than it deserves?

β†’ Hit reply with just one word if you'd like. I'm curious what keeps showing up.

🎯 THE MOMENT

I hear the same sentence almost every week from friends, clients, family, and even in the media:

"I'm behind."

Behind in business. Behind financially. Behind in my career. Behind everyone else on LinkedIn. Behind where I thought I'd be by now.

The more I coach leaders, founders, and executives, the less I believe they're actually behind. They're paying interest.

Interest on an old career decision. Interest on a mistake they made five years ago. Interest on a version of success they no longer even want. Interest on comparing today's life against yesterday's expectations. That's what I've started calling Time Debt.

Because time isn't what gets lost. It's our attention.

The past quietly invoices the present. And most of us keep paying without realizing it.

⚑ QUICK SPIN

When people say they don't have enough time, I rarely believe they're talking about their calendar. They're talking about their head.

The meeting lasts one hour...

The regret lasts three years. The difficult conversation lasts fifteen minutes. The story you tell yourself afterward lasts a decade. The failed business takes eighteen months. Wondering if you "blew your chance" steals the next ten.

Time Debt doesn't accumulate because clocks move too fast. It accumulates because we keep dragging yesterday into today.

Every morning should begin with twenty-four new hours. Instead, many of us start the day carrying emotional luggage we've been hauling around for weeks, months, and years.

No wonder we feel exhausted before breakfast.

πŸ› οΈ MY TURN

I can point to several moments where I thought I'd wasted years. Leaving Digitas to join another company that wasn't what I'd hoped it would be. Spending years climbing through marketing and cybersecurity before realizing they weren't where I wanted to spend the rest of my career. Working at incredible companies while slowly recognizing that impressive logos weren't the same thing as meaningful work.

For a long time, I viewed those chapters as detours. I thought I'd lost time. Now I see something very different. None of those experiences stole my future.

The only thing that stole time was believing I should still be somewhere I had already outgrown. The moment I stopped trying to justify the past, I finally had enough energy to build the future.

That's the strange thing about Time Debt.

It isn't measured in years. It's measured in how long we keep arguing with reality.

πŸ“š THE BACKUP

Psychologists have long studied rumination: our tendency to replay the past in search of a different ending.

The problem is that our brains often can't distinguish between a problem we're actively solving and one we've simply chosen to revisit. Every replay feels productive. Very few actually are.

Meanwhile, neuroscience continues to show that chronic rumination increases stress, reduces creativity, and consumes working memory: the very cognitive capacity we need to make better decisions today.

The past isn't expensive because it happened. It's expensive when it keeps renting space in today's thinking.

πŸ› οΈ THE SYSTEM

I've started asking clients one question whenever they tell me they feel behind.

"Compared to whose timeline?"

That question usually changes everything. Most of us inherited a schedule we never consciously chose. Graduate by this age. Get promoted by that age. Buy the house. Become the executive. Start the company. Retire early.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped living our lives and started trying to stay on someone else's itinerary.

This week, try three questions.

  • What part of my past am I still trying to fix?
  • What timeline am I measuring myself against?
  • What would change if today counted as a brand-new beginning?

Time moves forward automatically. Freedom usually doesn't.

πŸ’‘ THE SHIFT

I've realized something over the last few months: I've never liked the word burnout. Not because burnout isn't real. Because it describes the ending. Not the beginning.

Nothing burns without a spark. A flame starts with something almost invisible.

A tiny strike. A single ember. Static electricity. Then, if nothing changes, the fire grows.

Leadership works exactly the same way. People don't suddenly burn out. They accumulate invisible debt. Leadership Debt. Belonging Debt. Meaning Debt. Time Debt.

Each one quietly adds another piece of kindling. Eventually people call it burnout. I think it's something different. It's Flameout.

Because by the time everyone notices the fire...the spark has usually been there for years.

πŸ€— YOUR TURN

Consider one decision you've been carrying around longer than you should. Not because it ruined your life. Because you've continued paying interest on it.

Now ask yourself a different question:

If that decision happened to someone you love, would you still expect them to carry it every day?

Probably not.

Offer yourself the same grace. The past can teach you. It doesn't have to employ you.

πŸ‘Š LET'S TALK

One of the greatest privileges of coaching is watching people realize they aren't actually stuck. They're simply carrying too much.

Not too many meetings. Too many stories. Not too many responsibilities. Too many outdated definitions of success. Not too little time. Too much invisible interest.

When leaders release the debt they've been quietly paying to yesterday, something remarkable happens. Their energy returns. Their curiosity returns. Their courage returns. And suddenly they have exactly what they thought they were missing.

Time.

If you're carrying a version of success, leadership, or identity that no longer fits the life you're building, I'd love to help. Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn't learning something new. It's finally putting something old down.

P.S. One of the biggest lies adulthood teaches us is that life is linear. It isn't. It loops. It redirects. It surprises. Looking backward, the chapters that felt like wasted time often become the ones we're most grateful happened.

P.S.S. πŸŽ™οΈ One unexpected connection kept surfacing while I was writing this issue. So much of Time Debt comes from following systems we never consciously chose. Career ladders. Timelines. Definitions of success. This week's conversation with Nico Lang (founder of Aligre) explores a similar question from a completely different angle: Who gets to decide what we believe? Whether it's leadership, media, expertise, or our own careers, the quality of our lives often depends on questioning assumptions we inherited rather than intentionally chose.

If today's issue made you rethink your own timeline, I think you'll really enjoy this conversation.
